（一）rather than的用法和注意点

（1）rather的用法

①副词rather表示“相当地”

[例句]

He looks rather like his father. 他看上去很像他的父亲。

②would rather表示“宁愿”

[例句]

I would rather come earlier. 我宁愿早点来。

（2）rather than 用于表示主观愿望的选择，即“宁愿……而不……”，“不是，而是”

[例句]

He would rather do the work with you than celebrate the National Day. 他宁愿和你一起工作，也不愿过国庆节。

同样的用法，有的同学可能知道would sooner … than…，这个用法与rather than是一样的。

[例句]

I would sooner die at your side than live without you. 我宁愿死在你身边也不愿意在没有你的情况下活着。

（3）rather than可反映客观上的差异，表示“是……而不是……”，当出现在句首时，表示“不是……而是……”

[例句]

It is rather good than bad. 这倒是好的，不算坏。

He spoke about this matter in grief rather than in anger. 他是很痛苦地而不是生气地讲这件事。

【注意点】

①rather than到底是表示“宁愿……而不……”还是“是……而不是……”呢？这里有一个方法给大家。如果句子里出现would或had等能表示强烈意愿的词时，多半表示“宁愿……而不……”。

I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.

我宁愿和你共同度过这一生，也不愿孤独地面对这漫长的岁月。

②当rather than出现在句首的时候，看成“不是……，而是……”。

③rather than中，有时候会省略than。
